Rattlestick Theater

Rattlestick Theater “is focused on energetic theater that responds to the complexities of our culture in conversation with community partners”. The project embodies Rattlestick’s core values of embracing diverse communities and people and empowering artists with a bold yet sensitive transformation of its home on the second floor of a historic parish house in Greenwich Village. Working within the tight confines of the Landmark building, AO devised a scheme consisting of strategic interior and exterior building modifications which will not only make the entire theater facility fully accessible but also expand creative opportunities for its artists, enhance its identity within the neighborhood, and create a new vibrant gathering space.

The entry sequence is reconceived with new façade openings, an elevator and open stair to become a welcoming two-level lobby with generous restored windows overlooking Waverly Place.  Within the theatre, new lighting, curtains, and audio-visual systems will be integrated and the stage will be removed to maximize the flat floor area allowing for numerous staging and seating configurations. Backstage, new restrooms, a green room and dressing areas will support use by performers of all abilities. New mechanical systems and lighting will improve energy efficiency and operations throughout while crafted elements made of blackened steel, concrete and painted wood introduce a new aesthetic that respects the historic structure while introducing a fresh look and feel distinct to Rattlestick.
